St. Joseph Hospital

Health Care services in the Northeastern state of Tripura got a much-needed impetus with the inauguration of St. Joseph Hospital at the capital city of Agartala on 19th March 2015. Shri Pabitra Kar, the Local MLA and Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly inaugurated the hospital and called it a ‘boon for the people of Tripura’. Built, managed and owned by Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy (SJA) Bhubaneswar, St. Joseph’s has become the first Catholic hospital in the northeastern state of Tripura.

The inauguration was immediately followed by blessing of the newly built hospital building by Holy Cross Bishop Lumen Monteiro of Agartala who had stood at the same spot and laid the foundation for the structure in May 2012.

The Agartala diocese has donated the plot of land to St. Joseph of Annecy Sisters for the purpose of the hospital.

Addressing a large gathering Bishop. Lumen Monteiro said that St. Joseph’s Hospital added ‘a new dimension to the ministry of the Church’ and is undoubtedly a ‘Welcome addition to the many developmental activities’ the Church is engaged in.

The prelate further called it a red-letter day in the annals of the Catholic Church in Tripura, a day on which its much awaited dream became a reality. He hoped the hospital that began in a humble manner would grow and become an institution whose contribution will bring about significant improvements in the lives of the people of Tripura.

Minister for Education, government of Tripura Shri Tapan Chakrabarty thanked and congratulated “those who have taken this wonderful and immensely relevant initiative and wished it all success and praised the work of the missionaries in the state of Tripura."

Sr. Linette, the Provincial Superior of the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy, Bhubaneswar Province assured the hope to provide ‘Accessible, quality patient-centred health care at affordable rates’ at St Joseph hospital. Undoubtedly, it renders remarkable, preventive and promotive health care to the suffering humanity with compassion and respect in the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy had its origin in France and came to India in 1849 with the noble mission of providing health care, education, and social service to everyone, especially to the poor and dis-advantaged sections of the society. We run hospitals and dispensaries in a number of places in urban and rural India and outside the country. We arrived in Tripura in 2007 in response to the invitation of Bishop. Lumen of Agartala.

St. Joseph Hospital, Agartala is a growing Hospital with advanced facilities. The Hospital started with minimum facilities in 2015 and from this humble beginning over past 6 years it is slowly grown to 20 Bedded Hospital providing quality care to all sections of the people at affordable cost. We provide best quality care to the patients. Our care extends far beyond physical symptoms relief; on the other hand we try to integrate psychological, social, physical and spiritual aspects of care. A holistic health promotion is given to all our patients.

A team of well trained Medical staff and non medical staff comprised of Doctors, Administrator, Staff nurses, Lab technicians, Pharmacist, X-Ray technicians, Receptionist and nursing - aids, working in different departments such as Administration, Nursing, Registration, Pharmacy and Lab with most of the tests including thyroid function and HbA1C test. We also have other diagnostic tests namely X-ray, ECG and recently added Ultra-Sonography Machine which is a big asset for us to Screen, diagnose and treat many cases as well as to conduct deliveries. This year, we had an another mile stone of opening an Operation theater with the latest equipments. We have Doctors from Chennai specialized in Urology, General surgery, Orthopedic, Neuro, well efficient in laproscopic surgeries and treatment. Doctor Sister from kerala specialized in Obstetric Surgeries and Deliveries sees the OPD patients everyday. We have Doctor from Andhra Pradesh, Consultant in Surgical Oncology on Fridays and on Saturdays, gastro-enterology OPD clinics.

Many people from different parts of Tripura even from remote villages come to our Hospital seeking healing and comfort. Mostly we get cases of fever, diarrhoea, anemia, pediatric, paralysis, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, jaundice, skin allergies, arthritis, TB, asthma and first Aid for the minor injuries etc.

We organize health camps every month in our Hospital in collaboration with Doctors from Chennai, specialized in Neuro, Urology and Orthopedic. Since most of the people are from interior villages, we enable people to benefit out of it. They are very happy with the service that is provided. We have provision for Gynic and General surgeries. Many patients come for the surgeries like Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hysterectomy, ovarian cystectomy and lumpectomy. Most of the General surgeries are performed here with much care and attention. We also refer patients for Ortho surgery and for further treatment to Chennai. We see that deserved cases get concession
